General FAQs
Common questions about the Scalar platform, roles, and multi-tenancy.
What is Scalar?
Scalar is a SaaS platform that helps companies:
- Gather ideas and feedback from customers
- Manage product roadmaps
- Run customer satisfaction surveys (CSAT, NPS, Polls)
- Communicate feature announcements and changelogs
Who can use Scalar?
Scalar is designed for product teams, customer success teams, and anyone who needs to collect and act on customer feedback. Each company on the platform has its own isolated workspace.
How does multi-tenancy work?
All business data is scoped to a company. This means:
- Every resource (board, idea, announcement, survey) belongs to exactly one company
- Users can belong to multiple companies with different roles in each
- Data is completely isolated between companies
What roles are available?
Scalar uses role-based access control. Users can have different roles in different companies.
| Role | Description |
|---|---|
| Admin | Full system access. Can manage everything including users, billing, settings, and content. |
| Staff | Operational content managers. Can create and edit content but cannot delete or manage users. |
| Moderator | Trust and safety. Can approve ideas and moderate comments but cannot create content. |
| Reader | Read-only internal access. Can view all content including private boards. |
| Customer | External engagement. Can submit ideas, vote, comment on public boards, and respond to surveys. |
What's the difference between public and private visibility?
When public visibility is enabled in your company settings:
- Your boards and roadmap are accessible to anyone with the link
- Customers can view and interact with public content without logging in
When public visibility is disabled:
- All content requires authentication to view
- Only users with accounts in your company can access content
Can I use a custom domain?
Yes. Companies on the Premium plan (or with the White-labelling add-on) can configure a custom domain for their public-facing pages. You can also upload a custom logo and favicon, and hide the "Powered by Scalar" badge.
How do I switch between companies?
If you belong to multiple companies, you can switch between them using the company switcher in the navigation menu. Your role and permissions change based on which company you're viewing.
What happens when I archive something?
Archived items (boards, ideas, announcements) are hidden from default lists but the data is preserved. Archiving is a soft delete; you can restore archived items at any time.
