User segments
This guide covers creating and using segments to group users for targeted communications.
What are segments?
Segments (also called segmentations) are groups of users that you can target for notifications and communications. Instead of notifying all users, you can target specific segments.
Default segment
When you create a company, a default segment called "All users" is automatically created. This segment includes every user in your company.
Using segments
Segments are used when:
- Publishing announcements: Choose which segment receives email notifications
- Sending surveys: Target surveys to specific user groups
- Bulk communications: Reach the right audience without spamming everyone
Common segment examples
| Segment | Who to include |
|---|---|
| All users | Everyone in your company |
| Active customers | Customers who logged in recently |
| Premium users | Customers on paid plans |
| Beta testers | Users who opted into beta features |
| New users | Users who signed up in the last 30 days |
Choosing a segment when publishing
When you publish an announcement and want to notify users:
- Click Publish
- Select the segment to notify
- Only users in that segment (who have email notifications enabled) receive the email
Email preference respect
Segments work together with email preferences:
- You select a segment
- Scalar filters to users in that segment
- Then filters to users who have the relevant email preference enabled
- Only eligible users receive the notification
This ensures you respect user communication preferences.
Who can manage segments?
Only Admins can create and manage segments. Contact your administrator to set up new segments.
