Customising topics
This guide covers creating and managing topics to categorise ideas.
What are topics?
Topics are labels you can attach to ideas to help with organisation and filtering. They appear as hashtags (e.g., #feature-request, #bug-report, #integration).
Default topics
When you create a company, these default topics are set up:
- Feature request
- Bug report
- Improvement
- Integration
- User interface
You can customise these or create your own.
Creating topics
- Go to Settings > Topics (in the Ideas & Feedback section)
- Enter a name in the text field (you'll see a # prefix)
- Click Add
Topic names:
- Can contain letters, numbers, and hyphens
- Should be short and descriptive
- Are displayed as hashtags on ideas
Editing topics
- Go to Settings > Topics
- Find the topic you want to edit
- Click the edit icon
- Change the name
- Press Enter or click save
Edits affect all ideas that use this topic.
Deleting topics
- Go to Settings > Topics
- Find the topic you want to delete
- Click the delete icon
- Confirm deletion
Deleted topics are removed from all ideas. This action cannot be undone.
Only Admins can delete topics.
Setting topic limits
Control how many topics can be added to each idea:
- Go to Settings > Topics
- Find the Topic limit section
- Enter a number (0 for unlimited)
- Click Save
This prevents users from over-tagging ideas.
Using topics on ideas
When creating or editing an idea:
- Look for the Topics field
- Select existing topics from the dropdown
- Or type to filter topics
- Selected topics appear as tags
Filtering ideas by topic
- Go to Ideas
- Use the topic filter dropdown
- Select one or more topics
- Only ideas with those topics are displayed
Who can manage topics?
| Action | Admin | Staff | Others |
|---|---|---|---|
| Create topics | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ |
| Edit topics | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ |
| Delete topics | ✓ | ✗ | ✗ |
Best practices
Keep topics focused
- Use broad categories rather than specific features
- Too many topics makes filtering less useful
- Merge similar topics when possible
Use consistent naming
- Stick to a naming convention (e.g., all lowercase, hyphenated)
- Avoid abbreviations that may be unclear
- Review existing topics before creating new ones
Examples of good topics
| Topic | Use for |
|---|---|
| #feature-request | New functionality suggestions |
| #bug-report | Issues and bugs |
| #improvement | Enhancements to existing features |
| #mobile-app | Mobile-specific feedback |
| #api | API-related requests |
| #documentation | Docs improvements |
